Discover STEM Learning for All with At-Home Activities from Girls Get STEM

Looking for fun STEM experiences to engage students in virtual learning? Girl Scouts of the USA has you covered! Girls Get STEM: Unleash Your Inner Scientist provides no-cost, easy-to-access resources that empower parents and caregivers to engage with their children at home plus expand educators’ virtual learning toolbox. Read below for three of our favorite at-home activities, all of which are accessible from any digital device!

  1. Virtual Field Trip

Virtual Field Trips (VFTs) are a great way to expose students to experiences taking place outside of their four walls.  The Girls Get STEM: Unleash Your Citizen Scientist Virtual Field Trip takes viewers on a journey to experience STEM camp at the STEM Center of Excellence. The VFT features girls that are interested in STEM, along with women scientists who excel in STEM careers, plus pre- and post-VFT activities to extend the learning opportunity.

  1. A Robot Dance

Research shows coding is a major topic of interest for students right now! This activity deconstructs the concept of coding by first encouraging an exploration of human coding.  Working together, family members can use the included “Top Secret Code Sheet” to develop their own secret alphabet using symbols to represent letters. Once complete, they can start using the new alphabet to decode secret messages! This activity will not only be a fun way to engage all members of the family, but it will help make machine coding much easier to explain, especially to younger students.

  1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

As families are experiencing more time together, take advantage of the opportunity to discuss family practices that can have a lasting impact. Families can discuss the importance of taking care of the environment, and then conduct an audit of their own energy and water usage to determine if they are being as eco-friendly as possible. Once the audit is complete, everyone can work together to come up with a plan to improve their energy and/or water usage habits in specific areas.

Girl Scouts of the USA jumped headfirst into bridging the gender gap in STEM with the launch of Girls Get STEM: Unleash Your Inner Scientist in 2018. Designed to pave the way for all students to become more involved, invested, and curious about STEM subjects, this program provides helpful, easy-to-use, standards-aligned resources for educators, troop leaders, and parents.
