SOS Instructional Strategies for Implementing Human Rights Education with Comprehensive Digital Resources from Speak Truth to Power

Human beings around the world, regardless of age, gender, religion, cultural background, or socioeconomic status, share a set of basic rights and freedoms simply because they are human. Human rights education, at its best, engages and empowers students, helping them to recognize and value their own power in making a difference, as they become the next generation of human rights defenders.

Speak Truth to Powerfounded by Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, introduces students to influential human rights defenders through powerful storytelling and interactive learning to inspire passion and action to end and prevent human rights abuses and violations around the world. In partnership with Discovery Education, Humanity United and Fund II Foundation, this program provides flexible, standards-aligned digital content, designed to educate, engage and inspire the next generation of human rights defenders.

The resources available through Speak Truth to Power lend themselves perfectly to application of Discovery Education’s SOS Instructional Strategies. Spotlight on Strategies includes research-based instructional strategies for integrating digital curriculum resources in meaningful, effective, and practical ways. Educators can find details for or implementing these strategies in the SOS Channel in Discovery Education Experience and we’ve highlighted a few of our favorites with program resources below.

  • Speak Truth to Power features timely digital lessons, such as Rights at Risk in a Public Health Crisis, that provide students with an opportunity to expand their thinking around current events and the interdependent and interrelated characteristic of human rightsThis lesson is a great fit with SOS Strategies that help students identify key ideas for deeper understanding, such as Three Truths…One Lie.  After introducing the applicable Universal Declaration of Human Rights articles, students could be asked to develop two true statements and one lie related to the information, and then share those with other students to see if they can correctly identify the false statements.
  • There are several SOS strategies that are ideal for helping students retain and summarize information when watching the defender video vignettes. These videos allow students to watch the stories and hear the voices of human rights defenders in their own words.  SOS strategy Six Word Story encourages summarizing by using the content as a basis for a story that conveys a big idea using only six words. After watching the video about Sonita Alizadeh, a student’s six word story might be “Raptivist speaks out against child marriage.”
  • The Defenders Interactive Map introduces students to courageous men and women around the globe who have been willing to speak up and defend the rights of others, often at their own risk. Fakebookan SOS strategy that encourages students to investigate and develop an understanding of a person of historical significance, offers a fun, relevant way for students to demonstrate learningAfter selecting a defender from the map and reviewing the in-depth overview, students create a social media profile page, requiring them to make connections to important events in the defender’s life.

As students are witnessing a new era in the human rights discussion around the world, now is the time to help them find their voice.  Expand your knowledge and engage your students with resources from Speak Truth to Power, also available on the Speak Truth to Power Channel in Discovery Education Experience.
