Whether you struggle with classroom management or you are a classroom management expert, you may have “students” who challenge you. We all have. You’ve tried every strategy you know of, but nothing seems to work. Have you ever considered that there might be more to it than just meeting “the student” in person? Could this be why nothing works for you to try? Could there be a main class management component that you are missing?
New Perspectives for Class Challenges
If you can see beyond what the human eye can see, you may be surprised to discover other nuances going on in your classroom that you haven’t considered.
Take a look at these familiar scriptures from the book of Ephesians:
“For we are not wrestling against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the rulers, against the cosmic forces of darkness today, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12, Standard English Version

Does this open your eyes? Imagine having x-ray vision into your classroom’s spiritual dimension. You will see the spiritual power of evil attacking you and your disciples and the spiritual power of light (angel) sent to help them and you. Wow! There’s more going on in your classroom than you realize! Can you see why there might be some key components of classroom management that you might need to add to your toolbox?
While little Johnny or Suzie may seem like the source of your troubles, that’s not really what you’re fighting for. It is very possible that something else is influencing their actions. Spiritual Strategy as a Key Component of Class Management
Before I go any further, let me be clear. Busana Muslim I’m not advocating forgiving negative student behavior based on “the devil made him do it.” What I do suggest, however, is that many of the problems you face have a spiritual and natural side. There are many great resources that offer natural classroom management strategies. I would like to offer you some of the key components of management from a spiritual perspective. This strategy is taken directly from the scriptures.
The same scriptures in Ephesus that tell us who the real opponents of our struggle are also give us some tools and strategies to fight this enemy. There’s a lot I could say about each of the tools and strategies listed in Ephesians 6, but for now I want to focus on two things:
Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:17)
Pray all the time in the Spirit, with all prayers and supplications (Ephesians 6:18)
Say What God Says About A Student or Situation
I used to think “sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” meant scripture. I would pray the scriptures over the situation, and I saw many answers to prayer. Later I discovered that this passage refers not only to the scriptures. It refers to the rhema or spoken word of God.
I love reading on Passion Translation. Translators took Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic manuscripts to convey God’s original message in modern English.
See Ephesians 6:17 in The Passion Translation:
“And take the mighty Spirit Sword of the spoken Word of God.” Ephesians 6:17, Passion Translation
When you say what God says about a situation, it’s very powerful! Isaiah 55:11 says, “Thus are my words that go forth from my mouth; it will not return to me empty, it will fulfill my purpose, and it will succeed in what I send.”
Saying what God says is an effective tool to add to a key component of your classroom management technique!
This is what I would recommend when you face difficulties in class: Classroom
First, ask God to show you what is happening spiritually that your natural eye cannot see. (Jer. 33:3)
Next, find out what He has to say about the situation. Sometimes this may come to you through a scripture truth you know about the situation. Other times, it may come through something the Holy Spirit says to your spirit about a situation.
Then, say what you heard God say about the situation.
Declarative Prayers for Class Situations
When you say what God says about a situation, you are basically saying it. If you are not familiar with this type of prayer, you may think, “What does this mean? Is it biblical?” Allow me to share an excerpt from an article on declarative prayer by Debbie Przybylski of Intercessors Arise International:
“Declarative prayer is a dynamic and strategic way of praying. We must be willing to wait to hear God’s voice if we are to pray declarative prayers. We must know the timing and voice of God. It can’t be our personal wish. Not just call it, the claim is a prayer. It must be God. He always had a plan. As His ambassadors and representatives on earth, we must stand in the gap in prayer for others (Ezekiel 22:20)…”
“Declarative prayer demands supernatural intervention from God on God’s terms, not ours. Our faith for declarative prayer comes from God and not our own efforts – God works through our faith – He is the object and the source. It’s not about our faith, effort and our own abilities or whatever. It’s all about God. He calls what is not in nature (Romans 4:17). Matthew 16:19 says, “I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven; what you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and what you loose on this earth will be loosed in heaven.” God binds in heaven, and then we carry it out on earth. We receive the word “rhema” from the Bible. As we listen Lord, our faith is growing.”
Let me give you some examples of what this might look like being used as a key component of class management.
Dealing with Fear
Austin refuses to participate in class discussions or presentations. He is constantly interrupting while others are sharing or presenting. You find yourself in a power struggle with him for this, often to the point of sending him out of the room before it’s his turn.
You asked God to show you what caused Austin’s behavior, and He showed you that Austin was struggling with fear. Because of that Austin caused a disturbance so he didn’t have to face the thing he was afraid of. You remember the verse that says, “For God gave us not a spirit of fear, but a spirit of strength and love and self-control” 2 Timothy 1:7. You start saying this in your class – not out loud which your students can do here, but perhaps in a low whisper that only you can hear or maybe when you’re alone at the start of the day or before Austin’s class. Then you say, “God didn’t give Austin a spirit of fear, but strength, love, and self-control.” Finally you ask God to assuage Austin’s fears, to empower him to participate, and to have self-control during class so he can learn.
Fighting Bullying through Prayer
Amanda bullied everyone in the class through bullying and fear. You have attended a workshop on bullying. You’ve been trying to build a relationship with Amanda so that she feels loved and appreciated, but nothing seems to be working.
You ask God to show you how to pray for Amanda. In seeking Him, He begins to show you some of the things you already know, like how Amanda feels unloved, rejected, and insecure. You know that the devil is the one who said these things to Amanda because he is the accuser (Revelation 12:10) and the father of lies (John 8:44). You fight the devil’s lies by telling God’s truth about Amanda: “Amanda was wonderfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). She was loved by God and nothing could separate her from that love. (Romans 8:37-39)” Once Again, you don’t speak this out loud where others can here, but in private where only you, God, and the spiritual atmosphere around you can hear what you have to say.
God shows you how the enemy works against Amanda through those wounds to intimidate and control others, as Jezebel did to Elijah in 1 Kings 19. You’ve prayed, “Thy kingdom come, Your will be done on earth (in the classroom) like in heaven.” You know that the devil was defeated on the cross. Knowing this truth, you might personally state something like this, “The devil, Jesus has defeated you on the cross. He stripped you of your power. You are bound in heaven. Jesus is the reigning ruler in my class. In the name of Jesus, I give know the fear and intimidation of leaving. You have no place here.” Then ask God to serve Amanda’s heart.
Beneficial for Your Students
Intercession for your students is one of the most powerful key components of classroom management that you can implement.
“Pray fervently in the Spirit, as you continually intercede with every form of prayer at all times.” Ephesians 6:18, Passion Translation
“That student” who has difficulty controlling himself, “That student” who has difficulty concentrating, “That student” who has a hard time being kind to others… what will happen if you start to intercede? he he?
James 5:16 says, “The prayer of the righteous has great power at work.”
You can ask the Lord to help your students have self-control. Ask Him to help your students concentrate. Ask Him to help your students learn. He made them. He cares for them. It is His desire to see their needs met both inside and outside your classroom. Sometimes you may not know what to pray for, but the good news is that the Holy Spirit does! Ask Him to show you how to pray for your students! He knows everything they need!
Prayer is one of the key components of classroom management that I could never have done without! Try to apply it, and watch what God starts to do!
Elements of Effective Results of Classroom Management
You may find yourself thinking, “Do you really believe that all my classroom management challenges are spiritual?” Yes and no. I believe that most of the great challenges you face in your classroom have an invisible dimension; however, we are human too! I wholeheartedly believe you need a key component of natural and spiritual classroom management. They go hand in hand! Imagine how much more effective your natural classroom management strategy will be when you have paved the way through declaration and intercession! This gives your students some breathing room to have the freedom of choice and the freedom to learn!
There are many more examples and spiritual principles I could share, but I’ll save them for another post. If this seems new and unfamiliar to you, I urge you to keep an open mind before abandoning this strategy. My goal is not to enter into a theological debate with you, but rather to share principles from God’s word that “works.”
When I started implementing this key class management component in my classes, the results were obvious. The atmosphere in my class and my students changes – even the most challenging students! Our Lord is the same yesterday, today, and forever! That means the God of the Bible is the same God at work in the lives of you and your students today! 1 Corinthians 4:20 says, “For the kingdom of God does not lie in speech, but in strength.” Jesus has defeated the devil on the cross! Let Him show you how to defeat the devil in your classroom so that your students can learn and freely walk into the destiny God has in store for them!
